Friday’s Game of the Night is in Tropicana Field in Tampa, Florida. With the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox facing each other six times in the next 12 games the Red Sox’s could use this to gain significant ground in the playoff race. Boston currently sits 5.5 games back of the New York Yankees and Rays in the AL East and the Wild Card. Two young guns are on the mound tonight, the Sox are going with lefty Jon Lester (13-8, 3.26 ERA) has really been rock solid for Boston the last three seasons. Lester is on pace to throw over 200 innings for the third straight year, while batters are only have a .226 batting average against him. The left hander is coming off a poor last start in Toronto where Lester only lasted two inning and allowed nine earned runs. Tampa will send out a workhorse of their own in former number one pick David Price (15-5, 2.97 ERA). Price hasn’t disappointed the Rays brass in the least bit since 2007, the Vandy grad currently sits second in the AL in wins and ranks fourth in ERA. The 25 year old is 7-1 with a 2.11 ERA in 11 starts at Tropicana Field this season including a Tampa 6-4 win over Boston where Price struck out 10 in 7 2/3 innings. A player to keep an eye is Rays CF B.J. Upton (.236/12/45), Upton’s struggled most of the year but in the month of August is batting

NHL Entry Draft 2009 at the Bell Center

In Montreal, when it comes to hockey, some media have a very unique but very effective  way to put pressure on the Canadiens organization.  For two days now, in what has become the hockey capital, two press points have been held with management personnel:  Boivin two days ago and Bob Gainey, Trevor Timmins and Jacques Martin yesterday.   On French radio station CKAC, excitement took over when the press conference was called yesterday morning: it was expected that the Habs would make the big announcement for what had been the talk of the town, a major trade with the Lightning.  But all Bob Gainey did was to explain the state of his business for the time being.  Following what became a major disappointment, some media members received this as a blow.  Criticism soon flooded the air in CKAC and, once more, angry fans called with sour comments on the GM.

I personally believed however that if you read through the lines, Bob Gainey gave some very precious indications on his plan of action for the coming days.  For the past 3 seasons, Gainey has been one of the most active GM on the free-agent market, trying all he could to land an impact player.  His efforts were unfortunately only met with disappointment.  And so, this year he has now decided to change his strategy and he will try to get this most needed big centreman through the trade market.  “We don’t know who’s going to be on the free-agent market and we won’t know until July 1, but I don’t see that centreman there. I see other good players, but I don’t see a centre” did he say.  According to Tom Lynn, former Minnesota GM assistant, who expressed his opinion in The Hockey News, “The knowledgeable management team will know that the trading market in connection with the entry draft will be their best opportunity to improve their team, and at the best value.”  And so, we know that talks have taken place for the services of Lecavalier.  And what we don’t know is that talks have probably taken place for the acquisition of other impact players should the trade with the Bolts fail.   More trades talk may happen in the heath of the entry draft.  Because landing this much needed big centreman is necessarily the number one action of Gainey’s strategy.   Would he succeed, upcoming free-agents Komisarek, Tanguay, Koivu and Kovalev could be more easily convinced to join a team who would have a greater chance at success.  Would he fail, Montreal would lose its power of attraction for these players.  Course of actions could be to try to get a Lecavalier, Marleau or Doan.  It could also mean acquiring the negotiating rights to the Sedin brothers.  Everything seem possible at this point.  In any case, one thing is for sure: Gainey will do everything that he can possibly do to make this work.  Because in addition to the team’s faith,  Gainey’s job as a GM is also at stake.

Louis Leblanc is a young talented French Canadian hopeful for tomorrow’s NHL Entry Draft first round.  And he is the talk of the town in Montreal as the fans favorite and obvious pick for the Canadiens.   Really?  Heard some minutes ago at French radio station CKAC, Leblanc had to be dismissed early from his interview because he had an appointment with the Leafs for some physical tests.  Is Brian Burke aiming at stealing the show tomorrow at the Bell Center by picking Leblanc to the fans obvious displeasure.

On April 30, 2008, I, along with fans from Montreal, travelled to Philadelphia for game 4 of the Stanley Cup playoffs between the Canadiens and the Flyers. While waiting for the players to board the bus who would take them from the hotel to the Wachovia Center, I witnessed Bob Gainey while he proceeded slowly to walk by the fans. All he heard from most of them was “thank you Mr. Gainey”. The fans were excited with their team and were hoping for the Stanley Cup. And so after a heartbreaking loss to the Flyers, Gainey acquired Tanguay and Laraque, and then later on Lang in the offseason, hoping that they would fill up the needs of the team who would then have a true shot at lord Stanley’s graal.
“Fans in Montreal, said Carey Price, can put you very high when things go well, and then throw you under a bus when the team loses”. And so, at the end of this season, Bob Gainey found himself as the target of criticisms from the angry fans and media. What happened to make this team from a Dr. Jekyll to a Mr. Hide? And what is the true value of the team that was on the ice those past two seasons. I strongly believe that the Canadiens can be defined between their 1st place, 104 points season and their 8th place, 93 points season. Last season, the team was plagued by numerous wounds to its key players. The previous year, it had been spared. Last season, many players found themselves in the media for the wrong reasons. The previous year, it was total harmony and team spirit in the dressing room. Last season, the team lost all 6 games against the brilliant Bruins. The previous, they had won all 8 games against Boston. Last season, many key players, deprived from their teammates, underachieved. The previous, they all had a good season. Add to that the extremely high expectations due to the Centennial year and you had the perfect recipe for disaster. So I believe that it is safe to say that the Montreal Canadiens had more of a 4th rank, 99 points team. Which in the NHL, is not so bad. But in the ever demanding Montreal fans, not nearly enough.
This summer, Bob Gainey is now in a very risky business as General Manager. Once more, fans have high expectations for their Habs. Gainey should find ways to retain free agents Tanguay and Kovalev to name just those two. And Komisarek should be back, but not at any price. Since the word went out last winter that Lecavalier was almost a Canadians at one point, fans have been showing their excitement at the possibility of seeing the big number four with a Montreal jersey next season. Would the hockey men draft a few French speaking young talented players next week-end at the Bell center, the crowd would cheer.
So far, Bob Gainey has done things his way. Quietly. But efficiently. He has hired experienced Jacques Martin as head coach, insuring that the dressing room will be dealt with firmly and with discipline next year. He has let go all assistant coaches in both Montreal and Hamilton but Muller, failure no longer being an option. He has also managed the salary cap so efficiently that the team now has the greatest margin in the NHL to hire free agents. Not a small achievement by any means since what made him a contender in the past years might now make him a big winner in that game. There are many reasons to hope it seems. So, it’s time to let this great leader we have in Bob Gainey, show us the way to a new promising season.

Hi everybody. I know, it has been a while. But health kept me from writing before. I hope that you will forgive my long silence.

Bob Gainey has now been the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens for 5 years. While he achieved the goal of putting a very good, young and talented team on the ice in the previous season, high expectations for the centennial season were not met. People are highly disappointed. And with the collapse of the team, many thought that the axe would soon fall on the GM. This, however, is not likely to happen with someone like Bob Gainey. The man has experienced difficult times in his life and career before. It would be safe to say that In Montreal, “when the going gets tough, Bob Gainey gets going”.
Bob Gainey has done both good and bad as a GM. His worst move according to many has to be the Ribeiro-Niniimaa trade with the Dallas Stars. While Ninnimaa never achieved anything with Montreal, Ribeiro is now a prominent player with the Stars. Some protest to the fact that he never successfully added a free agent: Mr. Shanahan chose New York over Montreal, Daniel Brière traded the pride of the bleu-blanc-rouge for the friends he had with the Flyers and Mats Sundin enjoyed last summer at the expense of the club. While waiting for an answer from Sundin, Gainey had to let Mark Streit walk. This eventually proved to be very costly for the Canadiens power play. On the bright side, he traded RIvest for Gorges and a first draft pcik which became Max Pacioretty, traded to get Alex Kovalex and Alex Tanguay without giving much for their acquisition.
So, is Bob Gainey still the right man for the GM job in Montreal ?
My answer for now at least would be yes. And for a few very good reasons. When a team has played it’s last game of the season, the general managers’ season takes off. It’s time to wrap up the past season, to evaluate the players, to prepare for the draft and for the upcoming free agency season. General Managers have then acquired an important sum of information from which important hockey decisions have to be made. So, if only for that reason, letting a general manager go at the peak of the offseason would prove suicidal. There is also the fact that the Canadiens are in the process of being sold to a new owner. Any major change in higher management during that time would not be welcomed by those who are in the process of buying the team. A third and significant reason has to do with the legendary calm possessed by Gainey. At this time when the team seems to be shaky, the calm and reassuring presence of the man can only make the difference between the sound and wise decisions that he is about to make, and the unsure, ill-prepared decisions that any other hockey man thrown in the position could have made.

My name is Louise and I am a Montreal sports fan. I am first and foremost a hockey fan and, of course, I love my Habs. I have always felt this passion for sports for as long as I can remember. I have seen all the great players like Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Jean Béliveau, Henri Richard, Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Larry Robinson, Serge Savard and Guy Lafleur to name just a few. I used to go to games at the old Forum, where I stood up the entire game. I have seen all the greats play, from Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Brad Park to the more modern day stars, Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby and Ovechkin. I have witnessed each as they attempt to overcome the well known Forum’s ghosts and fabulous hockey players wearing the Canadiens bleu-blanc-rouge. I have enjoyed so many Stanley Cup victories, each more special then the previous. I know, it has been a while since the Habs won one. But every year, with each new season, myself and thousands of Montreal fans always find reasons to hope and believe that next year will indeed be THE year. Like many other Montrealers, my passion has no boundaries when it comes to hockey. It might very well be why we are so demanding with our local teams and athletes, victory being the only option. We are so furious when our expectations aren’t met. We become so vindictive towards those with equal passion for the sport. And so hurt when our Habs fall short like has been the case this year. We aren’t shy in telling others how we feel. We burst into frantic applauds when we are happy and boo when the performances are not up to our standards. After all, in Montreal, the city is hockey. And yes standards are high because of all the great traditions that were brought in by some of the greatest players of all time.

When summer comes, I follow the Alouettes in football and the incredible Impact in soccer. Boxing is great in Montreal too. And so are those wonderful car races. Nascar will be here this summer. And word is that Bernie Ecclestone, under contructor’s pressure, is trying hard to cut a deal with Montreal in order to bring back Formula 1 in the city next year. And of course, I love to follow all the hockey news in the offseason. I think this is one of the most interesting times with the NHL draft, free agency, personnel movements, clubs’ sales etc. And this summer, in Montreal, will prove to be a very interesting one for sure.
